How Can I Replace Bathroom Drywall With Tiled Walls?
Typically tiled walls are installed in bathrooms for the entire bathroom, the shower, or specific walls within the bathroom to reduce the production of mold in moisture-rich areas, such as the space behind the sink or toilet. Kitchens are another popular place in the home where people install tiled walls, or more specifically back-splashes.
Will these tiles be getting wet?
The next distinction that needs to be made is if the specific tiled wall you are installing will be getting wet or not. If the wall will not be affected by water, you can simply tile over regular drywall. However, when a tiled wall will be receiving any moisture, like in a shower or above a sink, you will need to add backer board between the drywall and the tile. Backer board, or sometimes known as cement board, comes in sheets much like drywall. It is a waterproof material that provides a moisture barrier between the drywall and tile.
There are several benefits to using tiled walls.
- Hygienic and Easy to Clean
Tiled walls are much easier to maintain than paint, wall paper, or other tile materials. You can choose from a range of finishes such as matt, glossy, or semi-glossy. To keep the tiles clean, all you need to do is wipe them from time to time. Tiled walls are also highly resistant to abrasive chemicals and cleaners, which makes them easy to keep clean. - Moisture Resistant
Because tiled wall is resistant to moisture and humidity, it is ideal for damp environments such as bathrooms and kitchens. It does not swell or deform when exposed to high levels of moisture. - Stain Proof
Tiled wall will not absorb or retain stains, unlike other wall coverings. If you splash food, oil, grease or even paint on the wall, you can clean it with a simple wipe. - Fire Proof
Tiled wall is resistant to extremes of temperature. It does not react to frost or fire. It is highly safe for any indoor application.
